| 4 killed, 9 injured in South Kashmir | | Panic grips Lal Chowk over gunshots | | Mustansir SRINAGAR, Sept 7: Hours before the Zubin Mehta Concert, three suspected militants were killed by security forces in South Kashmir's Shopian District by the paramilitary CRPF, one civilian was also killed in the shootout. At around 1 Pm, approximately 4 hours before the commencement of the Zubin Mehta concert, four persons were killed in a firing incident at Gagrain Shopian. Police sources told Early Times, "Three persons riding a motorcycle passed by the CRPF bunker of Battalion 14 in Gagran Shopian. The motorcyclists on being asked to stop by the CRPF men refused to do so and instead pressed the accelerator and tried to fly-off at a high speed. This led to the suspicion and the CRPF personnel opened fire to stop them. However, the three motorcyclists died on the spot and two other locals caught in the line of fire got injured. The injured persons were rushed to the Srinagar hospital." The injured persons were identified as Tawseef Ahmad Bhat and Aadil Ahmad Wachkoo. Tawseef Ahmad succumbed to his injuries on way to Srinagar Hospital. Aadil Ahmad who was admitted in a Srinagar hospital is critical. The bodies of other three persons are at district police lines Shopian and according to police sources the identification of the dead was yet to be ascertained. Refuting the police claims the locals alleged that the persons killed were stunt bikers. They said that the CRPF forces fired "unprovoked" and the incident is a "cold-blooded encounter". One local said that the persons killed were innocent students and were riding two motorcycles when CRPF personnel in a nearby camp opened fire on them. Soon after the incident, hundreds of people took to the streets and clashed with security forces in Shopian. The angry protesters even tried to attack the Deputy Commissioner's office. Police used tear smoke shells and lathi charge to disperse the crowd. "We are trying to enforce curfew in Shopian town but it is very difficult to disperse the angry crowd,'' said a senior police officer. In yet another incident in the near-by Pulwama district, nine people, five of them police personnel, were injured when unidentified ultras hurled a grenade on a police patrol. The police party came under a grenade attack at Muran Chowk in Pulwama town. Officials said that the area was immediately cordoned off and the injured were rushed to hospital. They said that a hunt was on to nab the militants involved in the attack. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Panic gripped entire Lalchwok, late evening, when gunshots were heard in nearby Budshah bridge Srinagar. According to eye witnesses, Wagon R 5254 came under firing injuring three persons traveling in it. The witnesses told Early Times that the car turned upside down and the injured which include two women have been shifted to hospital. When contacted, police spokesman told Early Times, "We are ascertaining what happened actually." |
