| Vakil hits nail on the head, terms NC ungrateful | | Coalition of disparate parties | | Rustam Jammu, Sept 7: Controversial Azad loyalist and former minister Abdul Gani Vakil on Friday hit the nail on the head and said that the National Conference working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should be thankful to the Congress high command for leading the state government since January 2009. What Vakil, who quite often speaks the language of separatists, attacks JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz to please his master and questions the institution of Village Defence Committees, spoke is what the bulk of Congress leadership and all the Congress cadres and supporters actually believe in. Medical Education Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din perhaps is the one Congress leader who has been openly supporting Omar Abdullah and fighting on his behalf so that he completes full term in office as Chief Minister. It was Taj who countered the demand in the Congress for rotational Chief Minister. So much so, he declared that Omar Abdullah was appointed as Chief Minister for full six years and there was no question of his being replaced with some Congress leader. He also said that he made the statement that Omar Abdullah will hold the office of Chief Minister for full term because the Congress high command had shared its view to that effect with him. Taj Mohi-ud-Din made these statements when Omar Abdullah was about to complete three years in office and when some senior Congress leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma, were urging the Congress high command to revive the 2002 power-sharing formula. In 2002, the Congress high command and the PDP leadership had worked out a power-sharing formula that said that the PDP will be in the driver's seat for the first three years and the Congress will lead the state government during the remaining period of three years. Taj Mhi-ud-Din stuck to his stand, notwithstanding the fact that the JKPCC chief had consistently maintained that he would take up the issue with the Congress high command. Soz not even once rejected the demand for rotational chief ministership. Any way, what Vakil said about Omar Abdullah and his National Conference could not be dismissed as preposterous. His formulations were well-founded. Indeed, Omar Abdullah has been enjoying the loaves and fishes of office only because of the Congress high command (in this case Rahul Gandhi). Vakil was also right when he said that the "National Conference is pursuing a hidden agenda to weaken the Congress". There is no doubt that the owners of the National Conference like Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mustafa Kamaal hate the Congress in their heart of hearts and that they are with the Congress simply to enjoy power. Mustafa Kamaal, in fact, abuses the Congress and New Delhi almost everyday. Everyone in the state is aware of the nature of relationship between the National Conference and the Congress. Everyone knows that the coalition between these two parties is a coalition of disparate outfits with the National Conference running the show and implementing its pernicious agenda in a systematic manner and the Congress playing the role of second-fiddle. If Congress leaders like Vakil mean what they say, then they have to behave in a fashion that makes Omar Abdullah and his government fall in line. Vague statements do not impress either the general public or the Congress workers. They want the Congress to sever all of its ties with the National Conference. |
