Jammu, Sept 7: Three days after the expose of sexual exploitation of mentally challenged girls at Channi Rama Jammu, the office bearers of Rotary Club Jammu today had to face ire of media-persons for what, the latter called, derogatory language used by Club members in their press statement. To clarify their position, the Rotarians today organized a press conference wherein the media persons vent their anger against the Club's allegations that press played a negative role. Rotary Club members including the president Sunil Jain, Dr. Dushyant Sharma clarified that they were just facilitators who provided funds to social organization (Inner Wheelchair) and have nothing to do with the case. However, some media persons while waving the press note threw a volley of questions over them. "In your press note you (Rotary club) have written that media has given enormous hype to the issue. What do you mean by it ? You mean that the issue is not serious but media has made it serious!", a media person from national channel questioned. Another media person question, "You are taking care of mentally challenged girls for the last many decades and you were unaware of any report, How it can be possible? And now you are saying that media has made it an issue." Trying to calm down angry media persons, Rotarian, Dushyant Sharma said, "They are unaware of any reports in which administration claimed that the girls were taken outside the house. We listened from media reports?".
"We were unaware about any inquiry which was started around two months back, but when the girls were taken for medical examination we raised some queries that why the girls were taken out without consulting the club. We are even not aware that where the medical test of girls was conducted", Dr Dushyant said. While criticizing the incident, president of Rotary Club Sunil Jain said though the incident was very unfortunate and if the reports were true, the culprits should be hanged in public.
"We seek to clarify that some wrong reports viz-a-viz girls were supplied to outsiders, were also circulated by a section of media, which were totally wrong and baseless. Rotary Club has two members including Treasurer and Joint Secretary in whole management committee which comprises of 17 members. We have only supervisory role while other affairs are being taken care by whole time employees such as Director, Principal, Wardens, Teachers and Chowkidar, Cook etc", he said. He further maintained that to take care of all affairs, Rotary Club would have to depute more staff members, which would be impossible for Club due to their limited resources. "If charity donors will stop
charity, then how will we manage all affairs and who will take care of hapless inmates?", he questioned, adding they were ready to give any help to administration and also ready for any probe. Criticizing the district administration, Rotary members said that unfortunately has not taken them into confidence during investigation despite their repeated pleas. "Police is investigating the case and we are not privy to full facts of the case and If the happenings as brought out by the media are factual, we the members of Rotary and Inner wheel clubs unequivocally condemn the incidents as reported in the media and support the action being taken by the authorities and assure full cooperation to the Administration in bringing the guilty to book", they said. The Rotary Club members even sought apology from media persons, but their words failed to pacify media persons, who at last left the venue in frustration.
