| CM's passing reference to Shrines Bill annoys KPs | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 7: With Chief Minister Omar Abdullah making a passing reference to Kashmiri Hindu Shrines and Temples Bill lying with Select Committee of State Assembly in yesterday's Apex Committee meeting here has indicated that the members of the Committee failed to take up the issue forcefully in the meeting and corner Government for adopting dilly dallying tactics in its passage. According to insiders, the Chief Minister made a passing reference to the Shrines and Temples Bill which has been one of the main demands of the minority Pandits who want enactment of a law to protect the age old shrines and temples of Valley which are the symbols of its ancient culture and traditions. While discussing various other issues which were on agenda of yesterday's Apex Committee meeting the officials had failed to include it as the main demand of the community while discussing other host of issues. However, when a member tried to turn the attention of the Chief Minister towards the demand, Omar said that the NC 's stand on the enactment of law to protect the shrines and temples in Valley is very clear but it was Congress Party which is the coalition partner of NC who has not publicly cleared its stand. He urged the community leadership to pursue Congress High Command in New Delhi asking it to support in smooth passage of the Bill so that the law can be enacted for protection of Hindu shrine sin Valley. Abdullah said that there is nothing hidden and everybody from the community knows who is creating hurdles in the Bill. He also made it clear that NC has no objection in passage of the Bill but it is Congress which has not cleared its stand so far. Once Congress gives its nod the Bill will be passed next day. It may be recalled that certain vested interests that have very good understanding with political circles in New Delhi and were managing some shrines in Kashmir Valley are deadly opposed to passage of the Bill. These vested elements by using their political clout are trying to sabotage the Bill as some of them are very close both to NC and Congress top brass. Under these circumstances the fate of the Bill is uncertain notwithstanding the recent assurances given by Congress leadership to members of Pt. Prem Nath Bhat Trust the nodal agency of KPs which has launched a struggle for the passage of the Bill. The members of Apex Committee who failed to raise the issue forcefully during its meeting with CM and MoS Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Aijaz Ahmed Khan yesterday are facing stiff opposition from community in seeking an assurance from Government that the law will be enacted in the coming session of Legislature. |
