| Army organizes unique horse race | | | Sports reporter doda, Sept 7: To imbibe the spirit of competition as also to revive the traditional sports, the Rashtriya Rifles Battalion of the Indian Army organised horse race for Gujjars and Bakkerwals youth of district Doda. The competition held for those residing in higher pastures of Dessa area along with their flocks at an altitude of 10,200 feet in the lush green meadows of Gotul. Around 170 Gujjars and Bakkarwals horse men participated in the event which was witnessed by a huge crowd of locals who had gathered from Gwadis and Blocks. The winners and runners-up of the event were given away handsome cash prizes sponsored by Commanding Officer of Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, Doda. Company Commander, Dessa area praised the participants for showing the determination to win and also encouraged them to excel in all such events in future. The winner of the event was presented a cash prize of Rs 5,000 while first runners-up and second runners-up got Rs 3,000 and Rs 1,000 prize respectively. A special prize of Rs 2,000 was also given away for picking up of handkerchief while riding. Meanwhile, the villagers and Sarpanch were grateful to the Army for reviving the old tradition of horse race and saw it as a befitting farewell to the Gujjars and Bakkerwals at the end of summer season when they are about to migrate to the lower areas. The noble efforts of Army were highly appreciated by the local populace in Dessa area as well as by the district administration. Such en event helps build mutual trust and cooperation between Army and the turned out shepherds. |
