| NC gives Kargil to save Omar's chair | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 15: National Conference has conceded defeat in the Kargil Hill Autonomous Council with directing its nominated Councilors not to vote in the election of Chief Executive Councilor. Cong has been consistently arguing that nomination was against this nomination. The four nominated NC councilors were given written direction by the party to not vote in the chief executive councilor elections. The party by this decision has accepted defeat and also it doesn't want to further antagonize Cong. The relation between two coalition partners had hit the tipping point and there was every possibility that Cong would walk out of the coalition had NC not conceded its demand . Sensing the mood in the Cong, the NC patron and union minister Dr Farooq Abdullah publicly said in Srinagar this week that it has accepted defeat in the election. NC has suffered reverses in the elections and it was not acceptable to it. The party engineered a coup of sort to retain ground and thus control the Council by nominating the councilors. The party knew that retaining Council is a sure passport to secure win in the Assembly constituencies in the Kargil and it did win in the last elections. The council plays the all important role of development in the district where even ministers have limited role. It's for this reason the party was keen to retain it and also because of the fact that Leh council was already in the hand Congress. Party knows that with both the Council in the hands of the Cong, it could give it an edge in the forthcoming assembly elections, as Cong is already riding high. NC had an impression that Cong will succumb to its tactics. But it didn't read the writing on the wall. The party had shown its teeth in the last Budget session when it threatened to snap the ties. Sensiing the same mood, the NC agreed to relent just to save the chair. |
