Katra, Sept 15: In a holy place like Katra frequented by lakhs of pilgrims every month, where the affairs related to cleanliness and sanitation should be above the mark, are entangled in some a messy condition. Safai Karamacharies who have the onus the keeping the holy town are not a content lot in so far as their working is concerned . There is a simmering discontent among a sizable number who feel betrayal by the Municipal authorities in not considering their actual year when they started work with the Katra Municipal Committee. This has not only affected them monetarily but placed them quite junior in the list of seniority .
Two days back when these safaikaramcharies who stage protest demonstrations in support of their cause gheaored the Executive Officer of the Municipality , it sounded a signal of trouble among the official circles that things could turn unpleasant particularly when the festival of Navratras are around the corner. These safai karamcharies were given the jobs on contractual basis in the year 1998-99 as casual laborers . After having worked for years , when it came to regularizing them , they have been betrayed as the concerned authorities have left them out by allegedly tampering with their record of joining the work.
While many of those who have been regularized have managed so on account of influence in the right quarters , there is this lot who have faced injustice as their record is being projected in having joined the services of Municipal committee in the year 2004-2005. Whether this a deliberate attempt in giving benefit to few or a matter of carelessness in depriving them of the huge benefit of over five years , a period which means a lot for their growth in the organization , is something which they don't have clear clue. But as of date when they don't find them their name in the list of regularized are seeking justice with the only option of staging protest.
They are facing injustice on one more front. While they have been employed for the specific task of maintaining cleanliness , they are being taken for granted to do another , though a related task of carrying loads of garbage in the garbage vehicles. In another words more than safai karamcharies they are working as drivers of garbage driven vehicles . This according to the president of the Association is so because the actual drivers meant for carrying the vehicles have been employed by the officials as the drivers of their own vehicles. As a matter of this deviation from their original work, the drivers now shy away from carrying garbage and have left this on to safai karamacharies, though the pay and perks of both differs. This has also left a sense of discrimination and alienation among the safai karamcharies. With resentment brewing up, the cleanliness scenario in the holy township of Katra may get affected if their grievances are not addressed, given the fact that their have also threatened of a long drawn agitation. |
