| Devastated in incessant rains, Samba village still awaiting relief | | | Et Report
Samba, Sept 16: Several villages in Samba block have still not received any government help even after one month, since heavy rainfall devastated homes in several areas of the district. Remote Badnai village is one such example where more than 40 houses were damaged during due to the flash flood during August 13-16 are forced to spend their days and nights in open as administration has not provided any temporary accommodation to the affected people. Majority of the families are Below Poverty Line (BPL) but still no benefit has been extended to them under various centrally sponsored schemes. Dhyan Singh, a resident of Badnai whose house collapsed on August 15 said that their lives are totally destroyed. "We have lost everything with the collapse of our mud house but no one has visited us here. Even the local MLA, Yashpal Kundal has not toured the area". Local Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Sunny Sangral Villagers allege that even the road from Nud village to Badnai taken up under Pradham Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to make it motorable has added to their miseries. They alleged that its construction was left midway few years back as contractors and government officials swindled crores of rupee meant for the project owing to which people have been left high and dry. "We have to travel on foot to district headquarter or Mansar to get essential commodities and it is impossible to bring material to get our homes repaired. Government is totally apathetic to our suffering", said Sarpanch Shiv Ram. Kanta Devi, a widow who also lost her home due to heavy rains, also lamented the Government functionaries for turning blind eye to woes of poor people. She said, "We have not been extended any benefit of different schemes under BPL banner. We are still poor and turning more poor with passage of each day. My house got collapsed 20 days ago but none from the side of Government came to help us. Our family is spending days on the mercy of others just because of official apathy. Local people are critical of the MLA and said that he never visited the area, despite large scale destruction in several villages in the area. Deputy Commissioner Samba, R K Verma refuted charges of negligence and said that it will take some time to restore the damaged infrastructure. "Let me check the details from my staff about the village. We are doing everything to ensure that relief is provided to the affected families", Verma said. |
