| As normal life returns to Kashmir, Shopian continues to remain under curfew | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 16: Normal life continues to remain paralyzed in the South Kashmir district of Shopian as the curfew imposed by the authorities on September 7 continued for the 10th day today. People in this district have been caged due to the imposition of curfew and enforcement of strict restrictions. In the meantime authorities lifted curfew from other South Kashmir areas like Pulwama, Kulgam, Redwani, Khudwani and Kakapora in the morning today. Normal life returned to these areas and people came out to discharge their daily chores of life. No reports of stone pelting have come from any place of South Kashmir or any part of Kashmir valley. Residents of Shopian have voiced their concern over the imposition of continuous curfew in the town. They alleged that their life has virtually turned into a hell with no scope for moving out and carrying out normal activities. Both the police and security agencies are enforcing the curfew in letter and spirit while ensuring that nobody moves out so that there is no law and order problem in the district. The situation in the town remained peaceful and normal as no reports of any untoward incident were reported from any area. Director General of Police, Ashok Prasad had visited the Shopian area on Sunday and carried out a round while assessing the overall security situation. He interacted with police and administrative officials and stressed the need for maintaining vigil in the town. However, residents of Pulwama, Kakapora, Redwani, Khudwani and Kulgam heaved a sigh of relief today as the authorities lifted curfew early in the morning. People came out and carried out their normal activities. Both the public and private traffic plied on the roads and the day passed off peacefully. Curfew was imposed in Shopian and other parts of South Kashmir following the killing of four persons in the firing of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel on Saturday, September 7. This firing incident occurred hours before the musical concert of renowned music conductor Zubin Mehta at world famous Shalimar garden. One more person was killed in firing of CRPF personnel on Thursday, September 12. The killing of civilians sparked off protest demonstrations across Kashmir valley especially in the South Kashmir districts of Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam. People took to streets in these districts and raised strong protests against the civilian killings. They demanded immediate shifting of the CRPF camp at Gagran-Shopian and this demand was met by the State Government. Normal life also returned to Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir valley today after two days of continuous shutdown the call for which was given by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Normal work resumed in the Government offices, banks, schools, commercial establishments and shops. The attendance in the Government offices picked up after remaining dismal on two days of strike. Transport also plied on the roads and frequent traffic jams were witnessed on the roads. This meant that people had to face difficulties while reaching their respective destinations. Reports reaching here said that normal life returned to the other districts, towns and townships of the Kashmir valley.
