Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 16: Two of the CT scan machines in Government Medical College (GMC) are defunct for over a month now putting hundreds of patients to hardships as they are being forced to conduct the scans in private labs or asked to get it conducted in SMGS hospital. On daily average, around 20 to 30 patients need CT scan, mostly admitted in emergency ward with head injuries which is necessary to provide them medical help. There is total chaos and patients are the worst sufferers of inability of the government to repair the machines early. This is one of the biggest hospital in the region and looking at its condition, one feel so sad. Most of the people are afraid to admit patient in the hospital. On daily average, around 20 to 30 patients need CT scan who are mostly admitted in emergency ward with head injuries as most of the medical help cannot be provided in such cases with the report of scan. Some brain scan cases are pending for months, mostly patients from rural and poor background. These patients are suffering due to non functional machine in the hospital, but this was not the first time when patients have to pay for the fault of the hospital but many time earlier patients have to face problem due to one reason or the others. When contacted, Principal GMC, Dr Shashi Gupta said that engineers from Germany had visited and will again come to change the defunct component. "The machines will be operational in next few weeks and till then scans are being conducted at SMGS hospital. We know that people are facing hardships, but most of these machines are imported from foreign companies". It is pertinent to mention here that in August the only government-run specialised Gynaecology and Paediatrics hospital in the region SMGS Hospital shut down its bio-chemistry lab following electrical snag, which was only repaired when people hold protest.
