| Six months pass, no relief for quake victims | | People resent Govt's indifference | | ET Report Jammu, Oct 6 : Six months after medium intensity quake hit Chenab valley causing extensive damage to private and public property, people are aghast over insensitivity and indifference of the government in not extending any relief to the affected families. The agony of the people has been multiplied by the series of aftershocks which have rocked the region intermittently since then. While many believe that frequent tremors are being felt due to the dams constructed on river Chenab at Chanderkote and Dul but the governments of state and center are not concerned about suffering of people of the area. They are only concerned about the money being earned from selling the electricity generated from Baghliar and Dul-Hasti power projects. People of Doda and Kishtwar are disappointed over this indifferent attitude of these governments. They feel that those who visited the area, including central leaders and J&K ministers, cheated people in the name of relief package. They appealed to the people of whole state to boycott both governments so that they are not able to do politics on the tears of people. On May 1, the erstwhile district Doda was hit by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake which caused widespread damage to structures in the area. According to official data, more than 80 percent houses were completely, severely or partially damaged. After the quake, ministers, politicians, survey groups and others visited the area and assured people a relief package. The state cabinet even sent a proposal of Rs 607.7 crore relief package for quake hit areas but this proposal has been rejected by the central government. Now, when no one is talking about the area, people have lost all hope and it seems that no compensation will be paid to the affected families. |
