| 'Aggrieved' milkmen take out protest rally to highlight grievances | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 9: Agitated over the alleged harassment at the hands of officials of Jammu Municipal Corporation milkmen based in Jammu, majority of whom belonging to Gujjar community, today took out a protest demonstration and blocked traffic on the busy Tawi bridge to high light their grievances. The milk men stopped supply of milk in Jammu and demanded intervention of state government at the highest level to sort out the issue. The protest march, joined by hundreds of milk men started from Gandhi Nagar area and went up to Tawi bridge where they stopped traffic for some time before proceeding further. On way some of the milk men, took out milk containers and unloaded their containers in Tawi river in protest. The milkmen are demanding hike in rate of milk supply claiming that the prices of raw material and feed used in dairy industry have skyrocketed and it is becoming difficult for them to supply milk at existing rates. The agitated milk men also raised the issue of undue harassment of members of the community at the hands of JMC officials on daily basis. The milk men charged the JMC authorities of not taking action against the shopkeepers who also deal with milk products and are responsible for adulteration of milk products. The representatives of the milk men association claimed that unless the state government comes in to the picture they would not start supply of milk. The senior district officers including DC Jammu interacted with the representation of milk men and tried to pacify them and also directed them to ensure unadulterated supply of milk keeping in mind the coming festive season ahead. |
