NC plays to galleries; fails to summon Gen Singh
10/9/2013 10:45:03 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 9: National Conference has played only to the galleries with Speaker announcing that he will summon the former Army Chief but didn't set any dateline to his assurance.
It has become clear from the statement of the Speaker that NC only wanted to show that it can call even the former Army chief, though knowing fully well that it can't do the same.
ET had reported that Assembly is unlikely to call the former Army Chief.
NC couldn't dare to call the Army chief especially after the twin terror attack in Jammu and fierce 15-day long Keran encounter. The incidents have made Army more assertive and cautious with regard to the developments along the LOC and also in hinterland.
Calling Gen Singh at this stage and putting him to some questioning could certainly had and affect on the Army as former chief had commanded the Army and in this institution former officers are always given much more respect and honour.
Sensing the mood of the Army, Omar Abdullah had in his statement on the discussion on Gen Singh's allegation, in fact praised the role of the Army. In his entire speech he didn't speak a word about AFSPA.
Not only that, even on Wednesday , in his statement he blamed Pakistan for the developments across the LoC.
The Chief Minister made these statement a day after Army chief had categorically said that there is definite Pakistan hand in the Keran episode.
NC had raked up the issue to prove the point that this party can take on the Army. The party knew well from the start that it doesn't have the political weight to make a former Army chief stand in the Assembly.
But to build a public perception in its favour and to score political point over the PDP it raised its ante over it.
The party though couldn't play its card well as it sensed the mood in the nation after two incidents in the J&K and as planned it resorted to just lip service and rhetoric which may not help in tilting things in its favour.
