Sick Berwar Saffron farm achieves landmark yields;From 165 grams in 2008, Saffron yield increases to 2.670 Kg in 2012-13

KISHTWAR, Oct 9: The Berwar Saffron farm Kishtwar comprising over 217 Kanals had become the white elephant for Agriculture Department and was running in huge loss, as it produces just 165 grams of Saffron during year 2008 and its proceeding years.
After taking remedial steps taken by newly posted N.K Misra as Saffron Development Officer Kishtwar, this farm has become self sustainable and profit earning unit and achieved land marks achievement by yielding 2 Kg 670 grams of Saffron during last year (2012-13) under the guidance of Ajay Khajuria, Director Agriculture Jammu.
The department expected production of more than 14 Kgs of Saffron during current year crop which will be a record growth. "Since the quality of Kishtwar Saffron is the best quality and world famous, the Agriculture Department is lying foster to ensure all the pore and cones for ensuring the good growth of Saffron at Kishtwar where it has vast potential of its cultivation both in traditional and Nontraditional areas' said N K Misra while briefing media persons at Dak Banglow Kishtwar.
He said the Government of India under National Saffron Mission Scheme through the department of agriculture, have identified maximum area under rejuvenation and targeted in Kishtwar 50 Hector out of 120 Hector and accordingly have distributed Rs. 101.18 Lacs in year 2011-12, and Rs. 80.96 lacs during 2012-13 among the saffron growers as incentive with several other facilities live free distribution of Vermicompost , fertilizer etc. besides have arranged subsidy for the machinery like sprinkler sets, Dryer and Weeders upto 50%. He said that the department has channelized the services of Rehabri-i-Zarat and other employees posted in District Kishtwar which will boost the production a high.
He said that in order to explore the availability of ground water in Kishtwar, a team under the guidance of Director Geology is going on at Berwar farm.
He said that department is working hard for fixing the rates so that the Saffron growers will get benefited. He said that department has also established the compliant cell in which four officers has been engaged and their names along with Phone numbers has been displayed in each wards of the Panchayats in Kishtwar block.
