| Geelani, Malik put under house arrest; prevented from offering Eid prayers | | Huge Eid congregations across Kashmir valley | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 16: Authorities placed separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mohammad Yasin Malik under house arrest and prevented them from attending the Eid prayers as Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety across the Kashmir valley today. Reports said that since early morning authorities placed extra deployment of police outside the residence of Geelani at Hyderpora here in order to prevent him from offering the Eid prayers. Geelani was scheduled to attend the Eid prayers at Hazratbal and address the Eid congregation on the occasion of Eid. JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik was placed under house arrest on Tuesday evening and as such he could not offer the Eid prayers. Malik was scheduled to offer Eid prayers at Polo Ground here. His house arrest came in for condemnation from his party and it termed the house arrest as an infringement in the religious affairs of an individual. Chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was allowed to take part in Eid prayers at Jamia Masjid here. In his address, Mirwaiz said that Kashmiris want cooperation and not confrontation between India and Pakistan. He said that past seven decades of tension between the two nations have only led to worsening of situation and have not in any way proved helpful in solving the Kashmir issue. Mirwaiz said that solution of Kashmir issue was pre-cursor to any improvement of relations between India and Pakistan. He urged the Government of India to make conducive atmosphere for any peace process to move forward. He said that peace and tranquility is in the interests of both India and Pakistan and as such leaders of these two countries should take meaningful steps in this regard. Meanwhile, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety across the Kashmir valley. Huge Eid congregations were organized at various places with people in lakhs turning up to offer Eid prayers. People offered Eid prayers and exchanged Eid greetings. Happiness and joy was brimming on the faces of children as they were wearing colourful dresses and eating different varieties of food. Huge Eid congregations were organized at Hazratbal, Jamia Masjid, Jenab Saheb Soura, Syed Saheb Sonwar, Kalashpora, Budgam, Anantnag, Baramulla, Pulwama, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam, Bandipora, Tangmarg, Uri, Beerwah, Kangan, Tral, Awantipora, Pampore and other places. People visited their friends, relatives and neighbours and distributed meat since the day is marked by offering sacrifices of sheep and goat. An official spokesman said that Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the Kashmir valley with religious fervour and gaiety. People in traditional dresses offered Eid prayers in the Mosques for which the administration had made elaborate arrangements. The main Eid prayers were offered at Hazratbal shrine by thousands of people. There was no report of any kind of incidents from any part of the valley, said the spokesman. The spokesman said that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah offered Eid prayers at Hazratbal amongst thousands of Muslims. The Chief Minister also prayed for peace, development and prosperity of the state and country. He expressed the hope that while celebrating Eid, people will not forget the needy and share happiness with them, the spokesman added.
