Already red faced, NC up for more embarrassment
More party leaders likely to cross fence

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 16: Yet to swallow insult inflicted on it by its prominent leaders who crossed over to Congress recently, National Conference is up for another bout of disgrace as Congress has got feelers from some other National Conference leaders to join the party. According to sources many leaders had already submitted their formal requests to the party high command and an announcement in this regard could be made very soon.
A number of NC leaders even some seniors, are feeling suffocated in the party which they believe is ruled by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his man on Friday- who has been made the provincial president.
There is thinking in the party that not only inner-democracy has been quashed even their views are not heard and the acting party president-read Omar Abdullah- is not accessible even to MLAs.
Aslam Goni -who will be joining Congress is not a only case in point but also the pointer of things to come. Aslam was close confidant of Farooq Abdullah. According to sources, when cricket scam surfaced and PDP cornered it in the Assembly, sources said Omar directed Goni to resign from the Cricket Association and this infuriated Aslam.
It's after this episode that he was being sidelined and there was little left for him in the party.
"It's different thing whether Goni has political base or not but the important thing is that he has joined Congress, and it speaks volumes of the working of the party," said a senior NC leader.
A section of the NC leadership believes autocratic style of Omar coupled with the declining popularity has set the cat among the chickens in the party.
A very senior leader of NC said a number of leaders , who had stakes in the party, see very bleak future for them the way party is going and they are of the view that before party slides further it's better for them to switch sides.
"NC is surely to slide down to the third party after elections. And in this event, don't think Omar will stay in the State, and is already un accessible; so there is no future left for party cadre- which it boasts of," said a noted party worker.
NC leadership is guessing that while it may get about 15 seats, Congress might get about 25 seats and this is what has made them cross fences for better political future. Besides, many a leaders who have invested long years in NC are feeling choked and suffocated in the present party organization.
