Srinagar, Oct16: Soon after the Eid-prayers concluded at Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid, a group of around 30 youth were spotted in Nowhatta with banners and placards of former Al-Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden and banners praising Taliban. Though police immediately swung into action and dispersed the handful of protesters, no arrests have been affected in this connection so far. Sources said that it was for the first time that some protesters appeared in Nawhatta Chowk with Taliban banners and placards of former Al-Qaida Chief, Osama Bin Ladin. Eyewitnesses said that soon after the Eid Prayers, a group of youth carrying Taliban banners appeared in the Nawhatta Chowk shouted slogans and started marching in the Chowk. However, police personnel deployed in the area swung into action to quell the protesters. The police according to sources came into action and quell the protesters while resorting to lathis charge and mild tear gas shelling. Meanwhile, police sources said that the police was ascertaining the identity of the protesting youth who were carrying Taliban banners. Meanwhile, brawny clashes erupted in North Kashmir's Palhalan area today afternoon when youth started pelting stones on a police cavalcade coming from Sheeri training camp. According to locals at around 12:45 pm cavalcade of police came under intense stone pelting from group of youth who had assembled on the road. The clashes led to death of a policeman, (Driver) besides injuring four others. According to police spokesman, youth surrounded police vehicle and started attacking it from all sides. With the result a cop Kanwal Nain Singh lost the control of vehicle and it turned upside down. This led to his death on the spot. Locals alleged that after the incident police entered nearby villages and attacked everything. Meanwhile, Muslims across Kashmir valley offered Eid prayers at Eidgahs and mosques on today and greeted one another on the festive occasion. Large gatherings were seen in Eidgah grounds in the old city, at Polo Ground and Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar, and in towns across the Kashmir Valley as Muslims dressed in new clothes came out in thousands to join the Eid prayers. |
