Elderly widow robbed of her plot in Paloura, Police seeks order to act
Land mafia on prowl

JAMMU, Oct 18: Unholy nexus between land mafia and Police has pushed an elderly widow to the wall by first encroaching upon the piece of land that belonged to her late husband allegedly with the active support and patronage of Police and then by demanding huge sum of money for conceding their illegal possession over the said land.
Fragile and aged, Ujala Jamwal, widow of late Budhvir Singh was swept off her feet when she came to know that the plot measuring little above a kanal and a half her late husband bought as a security for his family was encroached upon by the local mafia who were notorious for similar shady deeds and had earlier also made an attempt to usurp the same plot. "We could not visit our plot in Paloura for a few weeks due to first a death in the family, followed by curfew and bandh in August last; but when we did, we were shocked to discover that our plot was encroached upon by the land mafia and a shed was constructed in the plot," said the elderly woman.
Ujala and her family narrated their tale of woes to the Janipur Police, but according to her, the SHO Janipur was openly supporting the encroachers for reasons best known to him. "Eventhough we had all legal documents including registry of the land and mutation in the Revenue record, the SHO chose to shut his eyes to the documents and went overboard to defend and vindicate the encroachers," she said adding that she also produced the copy of the court order she received earlier which restrained the encroachers from interfering in her plot.
Defeated by the cold response of the Janipur Police, on August 19, Ujala appeared before the SSP Jammu with a written application seeking restoration of her plot. While SHO directed an inquiry into the matter, in the meanwhile, a fresh report of the Patwari indicated that late Budhvir Singh was the legitimate owner of the said land. "Even as the SDPO was convinced by the investigation and directed us to secure our plot by raising the boundary wall and erecting a gate, as we started the work, a Police Patrol party came to our plot and told us that the SHO had directed us to stop work," Ujala narrated.
Now, that the title of the land has been established in the name of Ujala's late husband by police as well as revenue investigation, the musclemen who are notorious land mafia, allegedly backed by Police, 'editor' an unknown news portal and a little known lawyer are demanding huge cash from Ujala for conceding their illegal and criminal claim over her plot. "They are telling me that they have paid Rs. 2.5 lakhs to police and close to Rs. 3 Lakhs to the goons for encroaching the plot and are demanding Rs. 6 lakhs to drop their claim on the plot," she said.
Meanwhile, SHO Janipur Noor ul Islam when contacted admitted that investigations have revealed that Ujala Jamwal was the rightful owner of the land in question. "The Police can help to restore the possession in their favour if they secure and order of a judicial or executive magistrate, for which we are ready," said the SHO rejecting allegations that anyone had paid anything to him".
