JAMMU, Oct 24: To express resentment over the manifold increase in the price of onions, a protest was held by Dogra Front and Shiv Sena Mahila Morcha activists under the leadership of president Ashok Gupta took out a procession from Resham Garh colony to Jewel Chowk by carrying a cash locker in their hands in which onions were kept safe as due to the hike in the prices of the onions have become a luxury good rather than a essential commodity. Gupta stated that due to the current price of onion it is not a commodity worth consuming but worth saving in locker. Hitting out at the Congress government for hike in onion and vegetable prices in the city, Gupta said "total mismanagement" has led to such a situation and it could worsen if no concrete steps are taken. Accusing the government of dampening the "festive mood", DF and SS President said "the festival season is around but the Congress government has dampened the mood of festivity owing to its inept handling of the price situation." He said that due to Congress government's "total mismanagement" the onions were selling at the year's highest prices across the city. "In retail, cost of onions has touched around Rs 100 per while for past several months it were being sold between Rs 70 and Rs 90. Apart from onion, other vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage and even green chillies were selling at very high prices." |
