Two minors, five women among 8 civilians injured in fresh shelling

Jammu, Oct 24: Eight civilians including two children received splinter injuries late Thursday evening when Pakistan Rangers resorted to heavy firing in the Kanachak area along the International border of Jammu frontier.
According to official sources, fresh exchange of firing started around 6.15 pm in Kanachak area when Pak rangers targeted BoP Sohan on the Indian side and lobbed mortar shells. In the intense exchange of fire one of the mortar shell exploded in the courtyard of a house belonging to Tara Chand in Lalyal camp injuring four persons who were sitting in the open area in their courtyard. The injured identified as Anju Sharma w/o of Kamal Shamra, Kamlesh Devi w/o of Tara Chand, Happy and Isha Sharma (both minors) were rushed to the GMC & Hospital in Jammu.
In a similar incident of firing from across the border, heavy firing and shelling from the Pakistan targeted forward civilian villages in Ghakryal in Akhnoor sector. "During the exchange of firing another 82mm shell exploded in the house of Raj Kumar injuring Ratno Devi, Kuldeep Raj, Asha Devi and Pramila Devi were undergoing treatment in the Govt Medical College & Hospital Jammu.
According to official sources two fresh incidents of ceasefire violations were reported along the border in the intervening night of October 23/24 in two different areas. Late Thursday evening fresh exchange of fire reported in Kanachak and Akhnoor sectors around 6.00 p.m. Pak rangers also targeted RS sector late Thursday night.
"Earlier there was shelling of mortar bombs, rockets and firing by automatic weapons on border outposts (BoPs) in Nikki Tawi areas of Jammu district and Ramgarh belts of Samba district since last night," BSF officials said today.
Following fresh exchange of fire the border residents have also started making alternate arrangements to ensure their safety. For last two days the residents are preparing their own shelters in their houses and cleaning bunkers to spend night in safe shelters.
In the latest round, they fired 82 mm mortar shells and also rockets, apart from Light Machine Guns (LGMs) in civilian areas as well.
BSF troops guarding the borderline retaliated, resulting in heavy exchanges, which continued 0230 hours today, officials said.
There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the shelling and firing, officials sources said adding due to shelling, panic-stricken villagers have fled their homes to safety.
