Sports Reporter JAMMU, Oct 24: The formidable side of North Bengal Frontier today clinched the fifth consecutive championship trophy in the 37th Border Security Force (BSF) Inter-Frontier Hockey Tournament which was organised by Jammu Frontier at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. In the title clash, North Bengal defeated the hosts Jammu Frontier by two goals to one in a well contested match enjoyed by a jam-packed crowd at the Hakhu Stadium this afternoon. North Bengal took the early lead striking the opponent goal post in the very first move through Nitin Kerkera. The lead was well maintained in the first half and the score was further improved after the drinks break in the 40th minute by Udhay Bara. However, Jammu Frontier fought back in the later stages of the match and reduced the lead when constable Dharminder sounded the board in the 62nd minute. Two minutes later, Jammu got a golden chance to equalize the score on board but Dharminder missed the penalty stroke taken in the 64th minute. Considering his performance and conduct during the five-day long competition, Maninder Singh of Jammu Frontier was declared best player of the tournament. Earlier, in the morning session, Rajasthan Frontier trounced Kashmir Frontier 2-1 to secure third place. In all, 11 teams, representing as many Frontiers of the BSF took part in this league-cum-knock tournament. In the final and valedictory function, Major General, Ashwani Kumar, GOC 26 Infantry was chief guest who gave away winners and runners-up trophies and appreciated the finalist teams for their fighting spirit. The distinguished gathering was welcomed by Inspector General of BSF Jammu Frontier, S S Tomar, who presented a brief note of the event. Earlier, colourful performances by the students of BSF School, Paloura mesmerized the distinguished gathering showcasing the cultural heritage of the state. |
