Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 6: Inside reports revealed that both Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Union Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, have mounted pressure on Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal to retract his statement voicing support for Narendra Modi in case he was installed as Prime Minister. Party sources said that hitherto Sheikh has been trying to keep voters in the valley in good humour by fulminating against New D elhi, Army and against erosion in internal autonomy, But his statement in which he said that NC will support Modi if he became the Prime Minister had caused enough damage to the National Conference. When several senior party leaders, after voicing opposition to Kamaal's statement, conveyed their displeasure on support to Modi to Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah the father-son duo persuaded Sheikh to retract his early statement. Kamaal had issued the controversial statement a day before Rahul Gandhi's visit to Jammu. The NC leadership felt that Kamal's statement could enrage Rahul Gandhi which would further strain the Congress-NC ties. It is in this context that Omar announced in Jammu on Tuesday that the NC will have no relation with the BJP and the NDA. In his statement Kamaal had made it clear that it was the policy framd by Sheikh Abdullah who believed that the state Government should be by the right side of the party in power in the centre. And the same policy had been followed by Farooq Abdullah after his bitter experience from his row with the centre between 1982 and 1984.It was the r esult of this anti-center policy adopted by Farooq that his duly elected Government was dislodged through defections within the NC. It was on the basis of this bitter experience that he had sided with the BJP led NDA Government in the centre in 2001 and allowed his son,Omar Abdullah to get inducted in the council of ministers headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee.
