Nothing astounding about Kamal's support for Modi
11/6/2013 10:21:28 PM
Though some senior National Conference leaders have not supported the views of party Additional General Secretary,Sheikh Mustafa Kamal favouring party's support to Narendra Modi in case he(Modi) was installed as Prime Minister of India,Kamal does not seem to have gone totally against the NC's tradition. In fact Kamal has been forced to retract his statement voicing support for Modi. Even during the time Sheikh Abdullah was in power he too would prefer being by the right side of the party in power in the Centre for ensuing economic and political stability in Jammu and Kashmir. Later this very tradition was maintained by Farooq Abdullah, years after having tasted bitter fruits from his row with the centre, in 1984. Sheikh Kamal has created a flutter when he said that if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister of India, National Conference will develop a 'harmonious' relationship with him and will "support him." "NC will support the new government that is likely going to emerge at the Centre after the parliament polls," Kamal has stated. Kamal claimed that what he had stated about the NC's support to Modi was simply in tune with the policy framed by his father,Sheikh Abdullah, years ago. And Dr Kamal dilated on the issue by claiming that Sheikh Abdullah used to say that "we have to always sit on the right side of, whichever, government is in New Delhi.".Well Dr Kamal should have elaborated on the matter by disclosing when and where Sheikh Abdullah had said so. In fact during his life time Sheikh Abdullah had to forge links with the Congress that had remained in power till 1977. It was only in 1977 that Sheikh Abdullah had to be by the right side of the Janata Party Government. He had no qualms in doing so because it was Morarji Desai who had favoured clean Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir that had enabled the NC to maul both the Congress and the Janata Party by winning absolute majority in the state Assembly. And what added to the discomfort of some senior NC leaders was the way Kamal reiterated his support for Modi in case he became the Prime Minister. "If Modi becomes the Prime Minister, NC will support him in the interest of the people of J&K," Kamal. He made it clear that the NC members of the Lok Sabha will support Modi and in turn he would support the NC Government in developing economic base and general infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. While keeping in view the party interests in Kashmir Kamal has stated that while lending support to Modi the NC will not compromise its principles when the support is aimed at securing economic stability for the state. It seems that Sheikh Kamal is aware of the political developments and may be trying to enlighten his party leaders about the dangers if the NC Government came into conflict with the party in power in the Centre. And he seems to have not forgotten the events between 1982 and 1984 when Dr Farooq Abdullah had succeeded his father as Chief Minister after the demise of Sheikh Abdullah. During that period Farooq Abdullah led National Conference had to face the Assembly poll in 1983. And Farooq Abdullah had been advised by those who used to surround him that in case he wanted the NC to win the election in 1983 he has to adopt anti-centre stance. This meant he had to take up political cudgels with Indira Gandhi without remembering that she was instrumental in his coronation as Chief Minister after the demise of Sheikh Abdullah when G.M. Shah was getting ready to be sworn in as the Chief Minister. But Farooq wanted to retain power which he could do by winning the Assembly poll. He used all democratic and uncouth tricks for denigrating the Congress. He won the election and power in 1983 but had lost goodwill of Indira Gandhi. The Congress hit back and engineered defection within the NC which led to the fall of the Farooq led Government. Since then Farooq has learnt a lesson that he is to follow in his political career. He wants to be by the right side of the party or parties that are in power in the centre to ensure political and economic stability for Jammu and Kashmir. This very realization had motivated him to support the BJP led Government in the centre in 2000 which saw his son being inducted in the council of ministers led by Atal Behari Vajpayee. Hence nothing amazing and astounding about Kamal's statement and that too when the NC leadership has come to believe that Modi may become the Prime Minister.
