| Why Cong wants Assembly elections to be held along with general election? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 8: There are many Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in Jammu, who want the party high command to pre-pone Assembly elections in the state so that these could be held along with the upcoming general election. There are potent reasons for the local Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir to persuade the Congress high command to ask the Election Commission of India to hold the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously in the state. One of the most important factors which has forced some local Congress leaders to think in terms of persuading the Congress high command to prepare the ground for holding the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously is their belief that the "Congress-led UPA is destined to suffer a massive defeat in the general election" and "there is a great possibility of the BJP-led NDA forming the next Government at the centre, with Narendra Modi heading it" and that the "changed scenario would only mar the poll prospects of the Congress, especially in Jammu province". Infact, they are afraid of the Modi factor and they have come to believe that "the Modi effect would upset their applecart and help the BJP improve its position in this province". That the Modi effect has already impacted the state's political scene could be seen from what NC working president and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said about it only on November 4, the day of opening of the biannual durbar in Jammu. He had said it would be wrong to ignore the Modi factor in the country's political scene. The talk of simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir needs to be viewed in this context. |
