| Wedge between NC-Cong continues to deepen | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 8: National Conference and Congress differences are growing rather than narrowing down, the perception NC is trying to build. Omar Abdullah, who is attempting to woo Cong before the next Assembly election, got overboard to appease Rahul Gandhi when he said the panch who disturbed rally addressed by Congress vice-president in Jammu was not member of Cong or NC but from Panthers Party. Omar didn't think twice to the facts that panchayati elections were not held on party basis but some members off late showed their loyalty to different political parties. Rahul Gandhi, however, was quick to snub the Chief Minister when he said that it doesn't matter whether he was from Cong or other party but the points raised by him were important and real. Gandhi with his rebuff showed his commitment to the empowerment of Panchayats and is vision for percolation of democracy at the gross root level. Omar tried to trivialize the things with his usual rhetoric and appeasement policy and bringing into picture the presumed family bonding between two political families. Rahul apparently did read the message and he had realized that had he taken the party line of panchs and sapranchs it would have questioned his real intention of empowerment of panchayats and this was something Omar didn't read as in the past also he in the presence of Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi virtually abused BJP though both leaders didn't make any mention of it in their speeches clearly signifying that they would prefer to distance themselves from the rhetoric of Omar Abdullah. Rahul Gandhi, who moves with both these leaders, and also subscribes to their political thinking, did the same and this second rebuff to the Chief Minister. NC may be taking comfort from the statement of Rahul Gandhi when he said that he is friend and follower of Omar Abdullah. Gandhi couldn't have said anything different as Congress party is in coalition with National Conference both at the Centre and State and any divergent view today could have embarrassment and danger to the coalition. "What else Rahul could have said when party is in coalition but that doesn't mean the things can't change. Rahul has categorically stated that he will take final call after consulting local leaders who move around the people and leaders will inform him what ordinary people think about NC," said a senior Congress leader. |
