| Kashmiri politicians differ on NOTA | | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, Nov 11 : The historical Supreme Court ruling to include none of the above (NOTA) option in electoral process has sounded alarm bells in the pro-Indian camp. Ishfaq Jabar of National Conference (N.C) believes the option would adversely affect the prospects of Taj Mohi-ud-Din. According to him, he (Taj) is aware of his position and has been pleading for its non-applicability in Jammu Kashmir. Jabbar said the political atmosphere has altogether changed since 2008 in some constituencies like Uri where Taj has failed at all fronts. Some new faces of other political parties are likely to contest forthcoming assembly elections and Taj expects stiff competition from them. Ishfaq said he got more than 10,000 votes in 2008 assembly elections in a constituency where competition remains tough every time but he can see new voters are willing to cast their votes for him in the forthcoming assembly elections instead of following boycott call of separatist so thereby keeping in view the overwhelming response of people in his constituency to vote for the development and peace he whole heartedly welcome the NOTA option in his constituency. M.Y Tarigami who has got 17,000 votes among 21 candidates in 2008 assembly elections says that NOTA is a decisive choice for voters to elect their candidate and can by no means would turn out to be a tool for separatists to use against the electoral process of the state. Tarigami said that NOTA option included in the electoral process after Supreme Court ruling must not be taken otherwise as it is not an option for voters to vote for rejecting Indian constitution or Indian system of voting and ultimately no tool for separatists to use against the India. "It is a decisive choice for voters like in his constituency where there can be more or less 30 candidates contesting the forthcoming elections in 2014 so among many candidates NOTA is worthy choice," he said. Tarigami and Ishafq alike said that in rural areas where around 80% voting was recorded in previous elections, worrying for NOTA is useless as it has proved previously that even election boycott call of separatists never could harm the voting percentage. However, according to him in some towns and Srinagar city where people follow boycott call NOTA may be used by some new voters. |
