| Railway land worth crores encroached, police takes 'hafta' | | Alleged Railway officials, land mafia nexus in Jammu | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 11: The nexus between Jammu Tawi Railway officials and land mafia has come to fore at Jammu railway station as about 20 kanals of land belonging to Railways worth crores is being encroached upon with the active connivance of the officials of Jammu railways.
Highly placed sources informed that, the piece of prime land located at canal near Jammu railway station was being grabbed. The grabber in order to show his possession constructed slums and the same have been rented out to slum- dwellers who are paying in between 700-1000 per slum thereby earning more than one lakh every month.
Besides this, the railway officers have allowed outsiders to construct slums on the land of railways near Trikuta Nagar and in return, get hefty amount as rent from them. Police officers, allegedly, have also taken their due share. The criminal activities do not end here as Railway officers allotted some land to a hotelier for construction of a hotel. The palatial hotel was constructed much beyond the land allotted to him. Now, the hotel is being charged every month besides has been used as guest house of railway officers.
Earlier, rehariwalas were charged two hundred per day for holding rehari under the jurisdiction of Jammu railways, but this practice was stopped recently after strong steps by Government Railway Police officers as the same was posing threat to the security.
Sources further said that, administration of Jammu Railways, has become a hub of corruption and this can be gauged by the fact that CBI conducted two raids and a trap in a year and arrested various railway officials for corruption.
Pertinently on July 9 the sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation arrested three railway employees employed in goods service section for accepting a bribe from a Kashmir based business entrepreneur at Jammu Tawi Railway Station here.
"Acting on a complaint lodged by a Kashmir based businessman Mushtaq Ahmed against the Railway officials demanding bribe to dispose off the damaged goods, a raid was conducted today late evening at the Railway Station, told an official with investigation agency.
"The complainant who is owner of TMT iron rod in his complaint had alleged that the three railway employees posted with Parcel wing of railways demanded Rs 20,000 from him to settle the damage charge which actually costs is Rs 1.5 lakh. The iron scrap, dispatch from outside, was unloaded at Jammu Railway Station.
"We laid a trap and caught three railway staffers red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the businessman," the CBI official said.
He said that the accused persons identified as Tarsem Lal, Tilak Raj and their accomplice were taken into custody on the spot.
''We have registered a case and started investigations in this regard," he added.
On June 18 an eight-member team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a raid at the city railway station.
The team led by inspectors Jagdish Kumar and Kuldeep Singh checked the records at the booking counters.
Sources said that the CBI team took documents in its possession. The raid was conducted following complaints that the railway station had turned into a den of corruption. Laters the CBI submitted its report to the Railway Ministry. |
