| Employees strike paralyses work in Government offices | | | Mustansir Srinagar, Nov 11: The work in the government offices across the Valley was affected today after the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), an amalgam of various government employees' bodies, called for a two-day lockout demanding immediate release of leaders arrested under Essential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA). JCC leader Farooq Trali claimed that the strike was a "complete success". The strike was observed at all the government offices of the Valley. It was also observed in Jammu and Ladakh regions of the state, he said. The committee also convened a meeting here, which according to Trali was attended by several employee leaders. After a series of protests and strikes by the employees during this year, the government had arrested many employee leaders under ESMA and FIRs against hundreds others have been registered in various police stations across the state. Pertinently eight government employee's leaders including JCC president Abdul Qayoom Wani were arrested on Saturday, in Lal Chowk. They were later shifted to central Jail Srinagar. However, the JCC again resorted to protests saying the government had failed to fulfil the promises made to them. The employees' demands include release of arrears recommended by the sixth pay commission, enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years, removal of pay anomalies and regularization of daily wagers and casual workers engaged in various government departments. Their other demands include the inclusion of five years of contractual service of Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers in the service book. Reports reaching here from district headquarters said the business in government offices was badly affected on Monday after the employees stayed away on the first day of the two-day strike called by JCC. Pertinently, the JCC has threatened to intensify the agitation if their leaders were not released by this evening and cases under ESMA withdrawn. |
