| Amid restrictions, Police foil Muharram processions with batons, tear gas | | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, Nov 13: Amid curfew like restrictions around Lal Chowk area in Srinagar and at entry points, Police and Central reserve forces used batons and tear gas to disperse people from taking out a Muharram processions along Lal Chowk and other areas of the city. Locals in Shahheed Gunj and Karan Nagar areas alleged excessive use of force by police and CRPF and added that authorities had imposed undeclared curfew as nobody was allowed to move towards Lal Chowk. However, according to the police sources restrictions were put in place as per an order from No. DM/JW/Muharram/3082-3087/13 dated 11-11-2013, issued on Monday by the district Magistrate Srinagar and accordingly restrictions were imposed in the areas coming under police stations of Shaheed Gunj, Maisuma, Kothibagh, Batamaloo, Ram Munshi Bagh and Karan Nagar areas. Early this morning authorities restricted hundreds of people from taking out a Muharram processions along the traditional route. The people clashed with police at Shaheed Gunj and Karan Nagar. According to the details received, police used tear smoke shells and batons to disperse the gatherings and arrested dozens of people from different parts of the Srinagar as well. According to the Police sources minor incidents of violence were reported from Shaheed Gunj and Karan Nagar areas where people pelted stones on the police. Police and CRPF were deployed in large numbers on the main roads connecting Srinagar with north, south and central district headquarters of Kashmir. |
