| Urban Local Bodies Employees hold protest demonstration in support of their demands | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Employees of different urban local bodies of Kashmir valley today carried out a protest demonstration here and burnt the effigy of Executive Officer, Municipal Committee, Kupwara for making illegal appointments at the committee and resorting to other unfair practices. This morning hundreds of employees of local bodies assembled at the Habitat Centre at Bemina here and raised slogans in favour of their demands. The employees protested that the re-organization in the department has not taken place and the salaries of employees are withheld over the past so many months. The protesting employees later assembled at Press Enclave and once again raised slogans in support of their demands. They burnt the effigy of Executive Officer, Municipal Committee, Kupwara as a mark of protest. The protesters demanded stern action against the officer saying that he has appointed dozens of persons in the Committee through back-door. The employees threatened that they would carry out rigorous agitation in case the state government does not take any action against the officers who have resorted to large scale back door appointments in the municipal committees across Kashmir valley. They demanded immediate action against the officers saying that this badly affected the entire functioning of the department. "We are giving an ultimatum of 15 days to the government to take action against the corrupt and dishonest officers. If the state government takes action against them by December 6 well and good and in case they fail then from December 7 we would intensify our agitation with the people at helm being responsible for the consequences thereof," said Manzoor Ahmad Pampori, President, Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF). Manzoor said that action against the corrupt officials has not been taken since they enjoy patronage of few ministers in the state cabinet. He said the officials while taking the help of some ministers ensure that the file regarding action against them is kept in back-burner so that they continue to make merry. "If the state government does not take action against the corrupt officials then we would expose them for all the misdeeds done by them during their functioning. We will also reveal the names of ministers who are supporting the corrupt practices of the dishonest officers. The ball is in the court of state government and they have to decide what to do," said Manzoor. Manzoor said that reorganization should take place at the earliest so that the budget is released and salaries are paid to the employees working in 45 municipal committees of Kashmir valley. He also demanded a transfer policy saying that some of the employees are working for decades at a particular place. |
