Election 2014- Trust deficit among coalition partners ruling the roost
11/21/2013 11:17:51 PM

Mustansir
SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Given the fact that the 2002 and 2008 elections reflected that no party can claim to speak for all the people of the Valley, a proposition underlined by the election results of 2008, the ruling National Conference seems to be uncertain about future alliance with its coalition partner-the Congress.
Though it seems in the 2014 electoral battle National Conference has to play on a sticky wicket, however, it is being said that the Kashmir's old grand party favours simultaneous elections to the state assembly with the Lok Sabha elections slated earlier next year.
Well placed sources within NC told Early Times that the party leadership is suggesting elections to the State Assembly along with the Lok Sabha elections because it suites that party the most. Sources said the NC leadership is apprehensive that Congress might deceive them in the Assembly elections if they are not held with the Lok Sabha elections. They said the Congress party would like to go together for the Lok Sabha elections but may play regional card in the Assembly elections to keep the Jammu centric BJP and other smaller groups at bay.
"Our opponents particularly the PDP is already in election mode, they have geared up their caders and have even announced the candidature for four seats out of six but we are totally confused as we don't know what is cooking at 10-Janapath," a senior NC leader told Early Times.
However, the Congress party is thinking other way round. They do not favour Assembly election to be held along with the Lok Sabha elections. The inner feeling is that the Congress party should contest the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with NC but there should be no commitment from the High Command for going with NC in Assembly elections.
"Our's is a Jammu based party and given the Jammu centric agenda of the BJP and other groups we can't afford to go with the Kashmir based party in the elections because it would be detrimental to the party interests," a senior Congress leader wishing not to be named told Early Times.
He said the state Congress leaders have already cautioned the party high command against entering into an alliance with the National Conference (NC) in the next Assembly elections without taking local workers into confidence.
"The confusion over future alliance with the NC should be removed to revive confidence of the workers," said the leader.
While referring to reports regarding continuation of the coalition in the next Assembly elections, he said it was too early to say anything. He, however, said that ignoring promises, which the Congress leadership had made to the people of the Jammu region, would prove disastrous for the party in the coming days.
Another senior Congress leader echoed similar sentiments and said any hasty decision to continue with the NC would prove "suicidal" for the party.
