Outsiders not entitled to LPG cylinders in Jammu
11/21/2013 11:17:18 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 21: After the government banned selling Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders from sale counters of distributors of various companies, people living in Jammu from outside districts of the state are facing problems in getting the LPG cylinders.
These people have to get LPG cylinders from their respective districts for cooking purposes, which is proving very difficult for them or they are relying on the black market from where they get cylinders above Rs 1300.
Thousands of people from other parts of state, including Valley are working in Jammu and they are not authorized to get the LPG cylinders from any LPG distributor in the city. All distributors send these people back from sale counters with an argument that they will be getting cylinders from their respective districts where they have legal connection.
"Almost every month, I need one cylinder but being an outsider in Jammu, I am not entitled for the LPG connection in Jammu city. My legal connection is in Doda town from where I belong but I work in Jammu and have to get the cylinder from Doda only," said Gurpreet Singh.
The need of LPG cylinders increases manifold when Darbar move employees from Srinagar reach Jammu for six months. Thousands of employees including many other people from valley head towards Jammu to spend winters in Jammu but they are not authorized to get the LPG cylinders in the city here.
"There is no such provision in the system that people coming from different areas will not be given LPG cylinders in Jammu while they are working here. Only those people will get cylinders who have proper and legal connections," said a Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) official.
"I myself faced problems when I was with the move offices," he added. Another problem is that, the transportation of LPG cylinder in vehicle is prohibited and people carry cylinders from other districts on their own risk.
Earlier, people used to manage cylinders from sale counters of various LPG distributors but after the government tightened the noose around these distributors to check the black marketing and asked them to provide cylinders at the doorstep of people having legal connection; getting cylinders for others have become difficult.
The original cost of cylinder as per subsidized rate in Jammu up to first nine cylinders is Rs 430 and after that people have to pay Rs 950 per cylinder.
But the rate of cylinders in black market has also increased and people get such cylinders at more than Rs 1300.
