| Unrelenting mining mafia poses grave ecological threat to Ravi | | | Early Times Report KATHUA, Nov 22: With unhindered mining in the bosom of Ravi River, the life line of two riparian states of Punjab and J&K, the river is facing an ecological threat as flow of water has considerably reduced in the river. Alarmed by the ecological imbalances created by increasing mining in the river Punjab Government has banned the mining in the river. But no such decision has been taken from J&K Government in this regard so far. Sources said after the ban on mining by Punjab Government the mining material is being supplied from J&K to Punjab especially in the neighboring Pathankot district. Sources said that daily scores of trucks and tippers are carried from various parts of Lakhanpur area of Kathua district to Punjab. Sources said the huge dumping of river material in Punjab area has forced the Government to ascertain whether the material has come from J&K or has been dug from river bed in Punjab. To verify the facts the Punjab Government has constituted a team of officers to verify the facts from J&K, sources added. Sources said the team is currently in Kathua and it is verifying the records with mining authorities of J&K Government. Sources said that there has been such an alarming increase in mining in Ravi River in J&K, that the authorities allotted the work to the contractor without calling fresh tenders. This shows a nexus between authorities and the mining mafia in Kathua district, sources added. Sources said that alarming increase in mining in the area has also led to a great public resentment and people are demanding immediate ban on mining in Kathua district to save river Ravi from environmental disaster. |
