Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 22: Omar's assuming office of the Chief Minister in 2008 had generated hopes of a new era, free from corruption and nepotism. But five years down the line and at the fag end of his tenure, on the contrary, he has being viewed as a person who promoted corruption and favoritism. He has nothing to boast of except scams, broken promises and shattered hopes.
Today Omar has sought pardon from the people for the BOPEE scam. But, it was Omar who granted him extension. His continuation on extension in 2012 and his subsequent employment as in charge of the so called fast track recruitment prove how darling and dear he was to the government. It is not a crime by some officer within the system but by an individual who was foisted purposely. Therefore the Chief Minister as head of the government owes an explanation for this atrocity on the most talented and hardworking youth of the state.
The Chief Minister also owes an explanation as to how and why this government is recruiting only the old, retired and the condemned senior officials notwithstanding the reservations expressed by the PDP.
Everything connected with youth has been mismanaged and subverted by this government. Cricket scam before this also affected the interests of youth on a long term. As it turns out now, the BCCI has stopped further release of 60 crore Rupees for cricketing activities in the state. The case filed in the matter has been almost shelved.
Government jobs are put on sale again at the cost of youth. The so called fast track recruitment has been used only to extort money from unemployed youth through high fees to the government and bribery through agents, brokers and middlemen.
Youth have been on the firing line of the government from day one. Killing, arrests, thousands of FIRs and introduction of new weapons like chilli grenades and pellet guns all come at the cost of youth.
Whether it is a case of killing a youth in cold blood by government forces, shameful atrocities like Shopian, Gool or Anantnag or scandals like the death of Haji Yousuf or cricket scam involving Dr Farooq Abdullah, the stock response of the government and its head is 'stern action will be taken, no one will be spared'. Same has been repeated this time. How many times do we have to hear these hollow commitments? In most cases it is the victims who have been penalized.
The Chief Minister must come clean on his own role in repeated appointment of the former chairman of BOPEE. How could this person of dubious character be handpicked for such sensitive assignments as selection of trainees and government employees?
