| Baramulla LS seat: Beigh shows some 'reluctance' | | PDP high command's will likely to prevail | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 22: Even as veteran PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beigh's name was not announced by the party leadership on Thursday for the north Kashmir Parliamentary seat along with two other candidates for Anantnag and Srinagar constituencies, reason attributed mainly to his reluctance for now, high command's will and party's view is likely to prevail for him to be fielded for the Parliamentary polls. A formal decision may be announced any time soon. Sources within the party said though party discussed the names of strong contenders for all the six seats threadbare and Beigh’s name came up as the unanimous choice for the Baramulla seat in north Kashmir , but it was not announced formally as Beigh is said to be reluctant as yet on whether he should accept the mandate given by the party for some personal reasons. Sources said though Beigh is considered to be a political stalwart besides being a legal luminary of the state, he has some reservations on certain aspects which are crucial for contesting the LS polls scheduled next year. Sources further said Muzaffar Beigh, a close confidant of the high command and popular among rank and file of the party as well, came up as a strong contender unanimously, though Party has kept a panel of other three candidates as alternative options. Beigh is understood to have asked for some time to think over before taking a final call on the decision, said the sources adding that he is only taking his time and has not ruled out from contesting the elections. This is the reason Patron of the party Mufti Mohammad Sayeed while announcing Mehbooba Mufti for Ananatnag and Tariq Hamid Qarra for the Srinagar Parliamentary constituencies did not mention any name for the Baramulla seat. Beigh who rose to the chair of Deputy Chief Minister and held many crucial portfolios during the previous coalition government led by PDP, has remained active in many political rallies and functions held during the past few years in different parts of the state. Party has also been banking upon him heavily for putting forth its view and arguments on many key and sensitive issues, particularly those having legal aspects. On many such occasions in the Assembly, Beigh has been forcefully taking on the government, NC in particular while cornering them with strong legal contentions in the arguments he puts forth. However, high command this time has sought him to become a voice of the party at a much bigger platform Lok Sabha for apparent reasons, sources said. Pertinent to mention here is that during the last Parliamentary elections PDP had fielded Dilawar Mir for Baramulla seat who lost it to NC candidate by quite a margin of votes. This time the other leaders who have kept as alternative options include senior leaders like Nayeem Akhtar who is at present MLC and Nizamudin Bhat MLA Bandipora . |
