| Essex born Omar a state subject, but refugees from WP still aliens | | Leading wretched life in Jammu | | Neha JAMMU, Nov 22: The state unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) the other day hit the nail on the head saying that National Conference (NC) working president and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister "Omar Abdullah has confessed that he was born in Essex, England" and that "it is a matter of grave concern that the Chief Minister of the State is enjoying dual citizenship, but west Pakistani Refugees are still fighting hard for their citizenship". "The administration must grant citizenship rights in favour of the West Pakistani Refugees along with the proprietary rights of the land, which they are cultivating since long. The refugees living in the custodian houses may also be granted proprietary rights, so that they and their future generations can have a sigh of relief… Having a Chief Minister like Omar Abdullah is really bad luck for Jammu & Kashmir as neither he himself is aware of the background of the State, nor consults any senior from his party before issuing statements, the BSP president Tulsi Dass Langeh said at Vijaypur while addressing party workers. Tulsi Dass Langeh and his BSP - apart from fight the cause of the refugees from West Pakistan -- have been consistently demanding abrogation of Article 370 and state's trifurcation for quite sometime now, besides demanding all citizenship rights for the refugees from West Pakistan, the bulk of whom are Dalits. It is their firm belief that Article 370 is the root cause of all the problems facing not only the refugees from West Pakistan but the entire population of the state in general and people of Jammu province in particular and that if Jammu is to get its legitimate due share in the political, economic and social processes and the centrally-sponsored schemes are to be implemented, the state of Jammu & Kashmir has to be divided. Sometime back, the BSP had also moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha demanding trifurcation of the state, but was not adopted. The BSP is right when it attacks Article 370 and demands reorganization of the state polity on a regional basis. Indeed, the Kashmiri ruling elite and its handful of supporters in Jammu province, who represent only vested interests, have exploited Article 370 to the hilt to deprive the people of the state of their legitimate general political and economic rights and interests. It is strange that the persecuted Dalits and others who migrated to Jammu in 1947 to escape the fanatics' wrath do not enjoy citizenship rights in the state even after their over 65-year-long stay in Jammu. However, it would be wrong to put the entire blame on Omar Abdullah. It is the Congress that has created a situation in Jammu & Kashmir which the Kashmiri ruling elite has been exploiting to deny the people the rights they deserve as Indian nationals. |
