SRINAGAR, Nov 22: Already in dock for selling question papers of Common Entrance Test (CET) examination in 2012, former Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) Chairman, Mushtaq Ahmad Peer has also done 'wonders' during his stint at the University of Kashmir.
Sources told Early Times that during the tenure of Mushtaq as Head of Department (HOD), Computer Sciences sub-standard computer systems were purchased by the department. This was done on the instructions of HOD who got hefty commission from the company that supplied the sub-standard computer systems to the Computer Sciences department.
"Twelve years back dozens of sub-standard computer systems were purchased when Mushtaq Ahmad Peer was the HOD, Computer Sciences department. The computers systems broke down immediately after purchase but no enquiry was ordered by the people at helm. The HOD got handsome commission from the company that supplied the computer systems and huge loss was caused to the university kitty," said sources.
The sources said that Mushtaq enjoyed patronage from the government higher ups with ministers backing him for all his follies. They said the people in power have decided to adopt wait and watch policy with respect to future of Mushtaq adding that they are looking for loopholes in law in order to save him.
"Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has no justification in saying that he is ashamed of acts of Mushtaq since he backed him like anything. It was during the tenure of present government that Mushtaq was appointed as BOPEE chairman and later on as Consultant in Services Selection Board. Omar is just shedding crocodile tears in order to save his face from further humiliation at the hands of common masses," said sources.
Sources said that Omar along with his cabinet colleagues, other politicians and bureaucrats attended the marriage ceremony of second daughter of Mushtaq that was solemnized few months back. They said that former BOPEE Chairman booked Nigeen club for four days during the marriage function of his second daughter.
"Former BOPEE Chairman took hefty amount from scores of candidates who were selected as Patwaris in the Revenue department. In April-May 2012 BOPEE recruited around 1500 Patwaris and scores among them didn't deserve since they were inefficient in their studies. These candidates had passed graduation in third division but got selected as Patwaris. On the other hand the diligent candidates had to eat humble pie since they could not afford the money demanded by Mushtaq and his agents," said sources.
Sources said that former BOPEE Chairman was aspiring hard to become Vice-Chancellor, Islamic University of Sciences & Technology (IUST) or a member of Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) since he enjoys backing of two ministers in present coalition government.
However, due to latest action against him by Crime Branch of Jammu & Kashmir Police it is highly impossible that state government would assign any responsibility to him, at least for the time being.
