| Security forces deployed in J&K cautioned not to lower guard | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 22: The Union Home Ministry has asked various security and intelligence agencies to upgrade their anti-insurgency and surveillance mechanism in order to tackle the growing menace of infiltration and acts of subversive violence. Official sources said that in its latest report the Union Home Ministry has stated that the rate of infiltration bids had increased from across the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir during the last about five months. With the rise in ingress bids the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has also registered disturbing dimensions following increase in militant attacks on security personnel. The Ministry report says that about 50 security force personnel were killed by militants in Jammu and Kashmir during the last 10 months. It is in this context that the Ministry has cautioned the security agencies against lowering their guard. In fact the union Home Minister, S K Shinde has stated that the situation in Jammu & Kashmir continues to be a challenge for the Government. This year, there has been an increase in targeted attacks on the security forces. Around 50 personnel lost their lives in such attacks.Shinde has said that the trend indicates a nefarious game plan hatched across the border to demoralize the security forces and demonstrate to the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the capabilities of militants remain undiminished. Making a mention of the frequent ceasefire violations along the border, particularly in Poonch district of the Jammu region, Shinde praised the security forces for their response in such cases. The security forces neutralized several militant commanders, besides eliminating 35 terrorists along the LoC this year. He said: "The security forces, however, cannot afford to lower their guard, particularly in view of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections due next year. A fine balance needs to be maintained by them between firm handling of terrorism and adequate restraint in public order situations. This is important to limit civilian casualties and to deny space to separatist elements for fomenting further disturbance." |
