JAMMU, Dec 23: Outplaying their rivals in close contests in the finals, Uttrar Pradesh (UP) and Maharashtra today retained the boys and girls titles respectively in the 59th National School Games Volleyball Under-14 Tournament, organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), under the aegis of School Games Federation of India (SGFI), at MA Stadium, here. Minister for Roads and Buildings, Abdul Majid Wani was the chief guest, who declared the Tournament closed in an impressive, well attended and colourful function. Minister of State for Sports, Feroz Ahmed Khan presided. Earlier, in boys final, UP got better of Uttrakhand 3-1 (26-28, 25-17, 25-17, 25-23) while the third place went to Karnataka, who beat Delhi in straight sets. In girls title clash, Maharashtra prevailed over Rajasthan 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 25-10, 23-21, 18-16). This place bagged by Uttar Pradesh defeating Karnataka 3-0. Meanwhile, Rohit Bid of UP was adjudged best spiker in boys section, while Indira of Rajasthan named best in girls section. The best setter in boys section was named Satyam Singh of Uttrakhand, while in girls section, the best setter claimed by Pooja Kohli of Maharashtra. Mayuri of Maharashtra was adjudged man of the match while the man of the match in boys section went to Rohit Bid of Uttar Pradesh. Arun of Uttrakahand was adjudged player of the tournament in boys section, while Indira of Rajasthan was adjudged player of tournament in girls section. Speaking on to the gathering, chief guest, congratulated the participating contingents for displaying extraordinary skill in this mega event. While quoting the example of a player who showcased her skill and talent, despite being short in height in the discipline like volleyball, the Minister said that Sports helps you to do bigger things in smaller way. Minister of State for Sports, Feroz Ahmed Khan in his address lauded the efforts of the organizers in holding the mega event and appreciated the dignitaries and the participants for playing their part in making the tournament a grand success. Earlier, Director General Youth Services and Sports, Navin Aggarwal in his welcome address said that 42 teams drawn from 22 states and Union Territories from across the country participated. Later, Deputy Director, DYSS, Ved Prakash presented vote of thanks. Prominent among others present were Parvez Ahmed Malik, Ashok Kumar, Madan Lal, Siddharth Sharma, Kanchan Bala, Abdul Rehman and Deepak Handa.
