| Plan to install camera with Traffic Signal lights freezes in pipeline | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 23: The Traffic Department of the state has forgotten the plan to install cameras on the traffic Signal lights in the winter capital of the state. At the time of inauguration of the traffic lights in Jammu, on August 4, 2012, the department had a plan to install cameras with all the traffic lights. But unfortunately the department seems to forgotten the plan, as nothing has been done in this regard. To control the violation of traffic rules in the city, the department has planned to install the cameras with all the traffic signal lights. The traffic cops have fined more than 3500 traffic signal violators after the installation of traffic signal lights in the city. Despite conducting several survey's before establishing the lights at 30 places around the city, most of them proved useless just weeks after they were thrown open in September last year, creating more chaos and problems for the drivers. These lights have been put on blinker mode. Moreover many of them are not functioning. The senior officers in traffic police are now busy in thinking, what to do with the signals which were to be relocated, as they have been installed at wrong places and the plan of installing camera has been frozen in the pipeline. The traffic light project was undertaken by the JMC at a cost of Rs. 250 lakhs and total 30 lights were installed in the city in a phased manner. Omax Company was given the project for installation of traffic signals in Jammu under the supervision of Jammu Municipal Corporation. But neither the company nor the JMC is interested in maintaining the traffic signal lights. Senior Police officials said, "we have achieved a great success in regulating traffic at some points like, Bikram chowk , Divisional Commissioner's office Chowk , green belt Chowk and satwari. The plan of installing cameras is already in the pipeline." But to install the cameras, we need to update the records in the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs)," he added. |
