Srinagar, Dec 23: Chill has revisited Kashmir, with the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg recording coldest night of the winter so far after the mercury dropped to minus 8.6 degree. People in the Ladakh region continued to shiver ouring to below freezing temperature. Though the Sun was out today with partially cloudy sky, icy cold winds continued. A Met department spokesman said the weather will remain dry but cold during the next two days in the valley and Ladakh region, where the minimum will drop further. The famed ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir, which received several feet of snow, witnessed coldest night of the season far after the minimum temperature dropped again to minus 8.6 degree. The earlier lowest was minus 7 degree, recorded on December 21. Gulmarg received moderate to heavy snowfall during the past two days. The health resort of Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine, also witnessed drop in the night temperature following fresh snowfall. Against yesterday's minus 2.4 degree it was minus 4 degree, the Met spokesman said, adding that the upper reaches had received moderate to heavy snowfall during the past two days. In Srinagar, the summer capital, though the Sun was out today the intensity of the heat was very low ouring to dust and smoke, the minimum temperature dropped yet again after light snowfall. Against 0.3 degrees night temperature yesterday, it was minus 0.4 degree, the Met spokesman said, adding that there was 0.5 cm snow during the night in the city and outskirts. At Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which remained closed since yesterday due to snowfall, recorded minus 2.6 degree against yesterday's 0.2 degree. Kokernag in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 2.7 degree minimum temperature each, about two notches less than yesterday. Leh in Ladakh region also witnessed a drop in the night temperature after snowfall, which forced cancellation of all flights yesterday due to poor visibility. The minimum temperature was minus 9 degree, three degree less than yesterday, Met spokesman said. |
