Harbhajan eclipses Umar, Ram Dayal efforts

JAMMU, Jan 08: Experienced Harbhajan Singh stole the show after Umar Nazir and Ram Dayal bowled heroic spells on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against formidable Punjab at Moti Bagh Stadium, Vadodara in Gujarat today.
According to the reports reaching here, Harbhajan lifted Punjab innings from struggling seven for 146 runs in 44.6 overs to new heights of 251 for eight in 71.1 overs. It was Harbhajan’s innings that helped Punjab make 304 runs in 81.2 overs in first innings.
The brilliant knock of 92 off 79 deliveries studded with eight boundaries and six sixes virtually eclipsed the efforts put in by pacers, Umar Nazir and Ram Dayal, who shared seven wickets. Samiullah Beigh bagged two wickets while Parvez Rasool took the lone wicket of Harbhajan Singh.
In reply, J&K lost opener Owaid Haroon to struggle at 11 for one in four overs. Adil Rishi and Bandeep Singh were at the stumps.

Winning start by J&K boys in Nationals

JAMMU, Jan 08: Jammu and Kashmir today made a winning start beating mighty West Bengal 3-2 in a group match of the 40th Junior National Volleyball Championship underway at Dehradun in Uttarakhand.
Losing the opening set, J&K won the following but only to lose the third. However, the boys fought back and secured remaining two sets making it 3-2. The score: 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 15-10.

NGR XI, SRTC, BSF XI reach quarters

JAMMU, Jan 08: The NGR XI, SRTC and Border Security Force (BSF) Jammu today qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing 8th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament, organised by the All J&K Christian Welfare Association at GGM Science College ground, here.
In the pre-quarterfinals, played today, NGR XI inflicted a humiliating 10-01 defeat on Young Star. Rohny netted six goals, followed by three from Garry and one from Hira. Hiteshwar reduced the margin from Young Star in the 30th minute.
Meanwhile, in another pre-quarterfinal, SRTC XI blanked Jammu Sports 3-0. Vishal (32nd), Chandan (42nd) and Rahul (47th) were the scorers.
In other pre-quarterfinal, BSF XI outplayed Young Rovers 6-5 in tie-breaker. Earlier, the match ended in a 1-1 draw in the stipulated time. Young Rovers took the first lead with Vishal netting the ball in seventh minute. From BSF, Sikander brought in the equalizer in 15th minute.
Later, in tie-breaker, Devi Lal, Sumit, Sikander, Kulbir and Kulbushan were successful in penalties from BSF while Sourav, Abhinandan, Vishal and Abhimanyu scored for Young Rovers.
FIXTURE: Quarterfinals: NGX XI shall take on J&K Forest at 11 am; BSF XI to meet PDC XI at 1 pm; SRTC shall be playing against J&K Bank at 3 pm tomorrow.

Tug of War teams proceed for Nationals

JAMMU, Jan 08: State Tug of War teams today left for the Jhila Kiridi Sankkul, Nasik, Maharashtra to take part in the 26th Senior Men and 11 Senior Federation Cup (men and women) Championship starting from January 12.
The teams accorded send-off by the office bearers of the Jammu and Kashmir Tug-Of-War Association under the presidentship of Hardeep Singh Anand, here.
Earlier, the teams were selected through selection trials organised by the Association at Unique Public Higher Secondary, School, Gadhigarh, here. Around 60 players attended the selection process and finally 27 selected for the competition.

The Teams: Senior (Men) National: Pawandeep Singh, Inderjeet, Rakesh, Rammy, Wasim Akram, Mohd Nasir, Sandeep, Manmeet Singh, Rahul Sharma. Sunil Chakaria accompanied as coach.
Federation (Men) Cup: Mehal Puri, Narinder, Sanjeev, Showkat, Manjoor, Shakir Bashir, Manpreet Singh, Ajay Kumar, Shakir Ahmad. Ajay Kumar accompanied as coach and Ankush as manager.

JU postpones inter-college cricket, volleyball events

JAMMU, Jan 08: The Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu today postponed the inter-college men’s cricket and volleyball events, scheduled to take place from January 15 on the campus, here.
“The events have been postponed indefinitely in view of the venues taken over by the organising committee of the upcoming All India Science Congress to be held on the camps from February three to February seven,” Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh told SAN.
Fresh dates for the twin events shall be announced in due course of time by the Directorate, he added.

Sandhu Club, SABI Hoshiarpur in 3rd round of T20

KATHUA, Jan 08: Sandhu Cricket Club Ludhiana and SABI Club Hoshiarpur today reached the third round winning the respective matches in the ongoing 4th Police Martyrs’ Memorial North Zone Twenty20 Cricket Championship at Sports Stadium, here.
In the first match, Sandhu Club defeated Gateway Srinagar by 69 runs. Batting first, after Gateway won the toss and opted to field, Sandhu Club set a target of 179 runs. Prince played fine innings of 88 runs coming off just 56 deliveries. From Gateway, Altaf took one wicket.
In reply, Gateway Srinagar could not reach the required total and bundled out for 109 runs. Prince took two wickets and was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance. Prince received the cash incentive of Rs 1500 from vice-president of Chenab Textile Mills, Kathua, JL Mathlani.
Meanwhile, SABI Club Hoshiarpur also made it to the third round outplaying NCC Jammu by 39 runs. Earlier, SABI Club won the toss and decided to bat first they made 138 runs losing all their wickets in 16 overs. Chetan contributed highest 19-ball 34 runs. Deepak from NCC Jammu took three wickets
Batting second, NCC Jammu bowled out for 99 runs in 17 overs. Pargat Singh, who took three wickets from SABI Hoshiarpur, was adjudged man of the match. He was also awarded with a cash reward of Rs 2100 by Shaheed Welfare Committee Kathua.
