| With apprehensions of 'ulterior motives', Congress must adopt caution | | Why is NC trying to rush through new administrative units? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 9: On an admiration note for his leader and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, National Conference Provincial President for Jammu, Devender Singh Rana has sought an early decision on new administrative units. The manner and tone in which he has showed his concern for creation of new units immediately should evoke a positive response. But the way National Conference has been dealing with the issue has not augured well in the political circles with most reflecting NC's conduct in haste having some hidden and ulterior motives. The concern expressed by senior Congress leaders though on conditions of anonymity also reflects ruling ally not too happy the things are happening on the track right now. There are reasons to substantiate the apprehensions expressed for NC making haste in the matter. There is a fear in Jammu that in the garb of creating new administrative units, the Omar Abdullah government may opt for Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal Hill Development Councils. The people of Jammu have been averse to the idea right from Sher-e-Kashmir's times. It is being perceived as an attempt to divide Jammu region on communal lines and to change the demography of the region. NC's haste in the matter suddenly is also attributed to the fact that while the government also sat over and remained silent for over a year on the issue and now the cabinet subcommittee is rushing through the completion of this exercise as if there is some exigency and urgency to have it done in just 15 days, a deadline which has been put before the panel. It is for Congress to decipher what doesn't appear clearly on the scene but is quite evident on the political lines. The government, therefore, should proceed with extreme caution. The state is already polarized. Further polarization would have disastrous on the unity of the state. There is no need hurrying up with the idea especially at a time when elections are round the corner. Let it take time. Heavens will not fall if the process gets delayed by a few months or a year. Let the unity and integrity of the state not be compromised for the petty interests of a political party.
