| Now, opposition in Kashmir to new administrative units | | Where is the money?, asks Salman Soz | | Rustam Jammu, Jan 9: It's interesting. In Jammu province, parties like the BJP and JKNPP are demanding more administrative units in Jammu province on the ground that its area is two times more that of Kashmir, as also on the ground that the terrain of bulk of area of the this province is difficult and treacherous, in Kashmir, son of JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz, Salman Anees Soz, also Congress's spokesperson, has opposed the creation of new administrative units, saying the state cannot afford more administrative units as it has little or no money in its exchequer. Salman Soz is very active on Facebook and he invariably seeks people's opinion on issues of political import. On Wednesday, he took on the State Government and dismissed its exercise on the creation of new administrative units in the state as an election gimmick. It would be interesting to read what posed in facebook in this regard. His post read like this: "On the face of it, the idea is good but we have been given no sense of how much this is going to cost in additional money and where that money will come from. As you may have read, we already face a budgetary crisis (nothing new) and these types of initiatives will make things far worse for all of us, especially the next generation if we don't plan properly". It also reads: "It is almost as if the Government wants to distribute administrative units to different areas to make this a political issue in the elections. After the elections, who cares how these units function and if people's lives suffer even more because of lack of proper planning in implementing such a major initiative. We all know how panchayats have not worked out as well as they could have. They have few real financial or administrative powers. If this proposal goes through without thoroughly examining its financial and staffing implications, the next Government will pay for it dearly and people will pay for it dearly. We have a mess already. We better make some tough decisions and start cleaning things up before we do further damage to our state and its economy". Notwithstanding the fact that Salman Soz made a very valid point, the people of Jammu province do deserve more administrative units so that the administration is brought to the doorsteps of the neglected people of this province. Kashmir already has enough of administrative units. So mush so, it has a couple of districts which are just one-tehsil district. Take, for example, Shopian. |
