| Delete Jammu from state's nomenclature | | Congress under sharp attack | | Neha Jammu, Jan 9: The other day, the state unit of BJP charged the Congress with conspiring against Jammu province in 1949 and said that the Congress more than the Valley-centric and pro-autonomy NC and pro-self-rule PDP has harmed the people of Jammu province to keep its masters in Kashmir on its right side. Actually, the BJP dismissed as hollow the oft-repeated claim of Congress that Jammu was safe in its hands and the people of this province had to strength its hands as it alone could come to power in the state and said that "the Congress more than the pro-autonomy NC and pro-self-rule PDP has greatly harmed the general political and economic rights and interests of the people of Jammu province and asked the Congress not to make statements that further irritate the people". It further said that the "Congress has consistently played with the sentiments of the people of Jammu province to help certain Kashmiri leaders so that they could play negative games and communalize the polity under the garb of the so-called Kashmiriyat" and that "it would be foolish to expect any fair play from this party that is at the receiving end across the country". So much so, the BJP accused the Congress of trying to delete Jammu from the nomenclature of the state. "The Congress, which stands for a separate status for J&K to promote communal politics and fissiparous tendencies, just cannot be trusted by the people of Jammu province, or for that matter the entire state, as it has never allowed democracy to flourish in the state. It has from time to time during all these 65 years of the state's accession to India taken steps that subverted democracy in the state and barred its people from exercising the rights available to their counterparts across the country. So much so, the Congress on May 27, 1949 made a concerted move in the Indian Constituent Assembly to delete Jammu from the nomenclature of the State so that the state could be named the 'State of Kashmir'. The then Prime Minister and Congress leader Jawaharlal Nehru tried his level best to make the Constituent Assembly adopt the outrageous anti-Jammu amendment, but failed. The people of Jammu province are grateful to Prof KT Shah of Bihar, Pt. Lakshmi Kanta Maitra of West Bengal and HV Kamth of Central Provinces and Berar who opposed the Congress Government's despicable move tooth and nail and forced the Congress-dominated Indian Constituent Assembly to drop it," the BJP, in fact, said. Did the BJP level a wild allegation against the Congress? The answer is a big NO. A perusal of the proceedings of the Indian Constituent Assembly on May 27, 1949 did prove that the charge of the BJP was based on facts. Nehru did try to make the Constituent Assembly change the nomenclature of the state from the State of Jammu and Kashmir to the "State of Kashmir". Not only this, a perusal of the said proceedings also establish that the Congress subverted democracy in the state by allowing the NC leader and Jammu and Kashmir Wazir-e-Azam Sheikh Abdullah to nominate all the four members to the Indian Constituent Assembly and they included Sheikh Abdullah himself, Mirza Afzal Beg, Mohi-ud-Din Karra and Moti Ram Baigra. |
