| Congress takes exception to Chenab Valley, Pir Panchal idea | | `Omar intends to divide Jammu on communal lines' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 9: A section of Congress leadership has taken strong exception to the move of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of dividing Jammu region on communal lines. Senior Congress leaders had said demands for creating units like Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal units were first pushed by former Chief Minister late Sheikh Abdullah and Omar is following the same. According to the reports some people in their demands put before the Cabinet sub-committee for creation of new administrative units have called for creating Chenab Valley comprising of erstwhile Doda district, including Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban. "This is what Sheikh Abdullah had tried to do. He first mooted this proposal as part of the Greater Kashmir move. It's aimed at changing the demography of the Jammu region along religious lines. The move was opposed by then party high command. Now again Omar is trying the same," said a senior Congress leader, wishing not to be named. The senior leaders of the party have also took exception to some Congress Minister present in the committee for not resisting the move. The section of senior Congress leadership, which had witnessed the developments, had said they will again put the matter before the party high command. There is view in the party leadership that such demands are being deliberately pushed first to create divide Jammu and then for electoral benefits. "NC especially is playing petty vote bank politics. It's hoping to get some votes of a particular community in the coming elections. But at the same time it's pushing its agenda which is both anti-national and against the interest of the Jammu region," said Congress leader, wishing not to be named. Jammu is the only region with cultural and religious diversity. Kashmir is now just homogenous. A section in the Valley is trying to push communal card in Jammu region but it has not succeeded till now but is trying to push it. "NC in the process has also damaged Congress as it has given fresh handle to the BJP. NC is damaging the Cong, which represents secular liberal thought, both ways. And this can't be accepted," said a senior Congress leader. |
