| Defunct ventilator issue reaches SHRC | | Complainant demands probe | | ET Report Jammu, Jan 9 : The issue of defunct ventilators at Government Medical College Jammu was brought to the notice of State Human Rights Commission. The Human Rights and RTI activist Deepak Sharma today submitted a complaint to the State Human Rights Commission regarding violation of 'Right to life' of patients by not providing ventilators support by hospital authorities, in Government Medical College, Jammu. The activist, through complaint has prayed to the State Human Rights Commission to pass directions to replace or repair non functional ventilators, hold a time bound inquiry to find why the ventilators remained non functional for the last 3 years and to fix responsibility of those who were responsible for ensuring the functioning of the ventilators. Giving details of the complaint, Deepak said that recently in reply to an RTI filed by him, the authorities of the Government Medical College, Jammu admitted that out of total 28 ventilators available in Government Medical College, Jammu only 3 are in working condition and the other 23 ventilators are defunct from the last 3 years and taking a note of that he filed the complaint to the rights panel. In the complaint to the SHRC, it is submitted that the ventilator is a lifeline for a patient in critical condition and the 'Right to Life' of the patients is being violated by the concerned authorities of the Government Medical College, Jammu, by not providing ventilators to the patients who are in need of ventilator support for their survival and in the absence of ventilator support many unfortunate patients lose their lives. It is unfortunate that 23 ventilators are lying in non working condition since 3 years but for the reasons best known to the concerned authorities of GMC, nothing serious has been done to make them functional. It is also submitted in the complaint that directions be passed to ensure the functioning of ventilators and to submit the status report in this regard to competent authorities at regular interval of time. |
