| Army crackdown in Kupwara, hunt to nab suspected ultras | | | Srinagar, Jan 9: Army on Thursday carried out day long crackdown in Kukroosa area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district and launched a massive hunt to nab suspected ultras hiding in the locality. Eyewitnesses said that army's 6 RR on a tip off about the presence of 3-4 militants, laid a cordon around Kukroosa area this morning and started combing operation. During the cordon army asked the youth to produce identity cards. The crackdown continued till late evening causing inconvenience to the children and aged persons including women, locals alleged. "Around 8 am, we were asked by the army to come out of our house and assemble in the fields. The men belonging to all the 200 families of the area including Joginbagh, Kalipora and Harkarpora were kept in open," Mohammad Shafi, a local said. A senior army official told GNS that the search operation was launched in the area on the inputs about the presence of a group of militants in the area. He said that the searches continued for some time but no one was arrested. Meanwhile, a major search operation has been launched by army in Kaker Pati village of Diver in Lolab of the frontier district amid intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of 5-6 heavily armed militants in the area. The search operation was going on when the last reports came in. |
