SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Police and security forces achieved a major breakthrough in anti-militancy operations as they killed the Divisional Commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) along with his two associates during an encounter in the Dooru village of Sopore area in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Police claimed that the killed militants are of foreign origin adding that the trio might be the same who got trapped in the Marvel village some days, but managed to escape at that time. The police identified the slain divisional commander of JeM as Abu Hassan and said the militants were killed during a brief encounter in the Dooru village in the afternoon today. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Abdul Gani Mir told reporters that the three foreign militants affiliated to Jaish were killed in the encounter. The IGP said that the group led by Abu Hassan had recently arrived in Sopore. He said the group was active in the Lolab valley of Kupwara district for over a year. "On specific information, Sopore police and 22 RR launched a cordon and search operation at village Dooru in Sopore. The militants fired on the search party triggering an encounter in which three JeM militants got killed. Besides Abu Hassan, the other two militants killed in the encounter were identified as Muzamil alias Farooq and Rizwan," said the IGP.
The IGP said that Abu Hassan had taken over as the JeM's commander after the killing of Qari Yasir in a gunfight in Lolab in July last year. He ruled out the role of the group in the killing of ASI Kafeel in an encounter in Chankhan area of Sopore last week. He did not rule out the possibility that the group was same that got intercepted by police and security forces in the Marvel village of Sopore area last week.
A defence spokesman while sharing information about the encounter said that based on specific intelligence provided by SOG of Jammu & Kashmir Police, a joint operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles and SOG in village Pazwalpora-Dooru, Sopore resulting into killing of three militants. The defence spokesman said that three AK 47 rifles and ammunition were recovered from the possession of slain militants. He said that two army personnel sustained gunshot wounds as and when the militants fired upon them.
"Joint search operations were launched by troops of Rashtriya Rifles and SOG, Sopore on January 9 in the Marvel Village following specific information about the presence of two to three militants in the area. Search operations continued till today.
The militants hiding in a house in Dooru village opened fire at army personnel injuring two soldiers. A fierce gunfight ensued which continued for four hours, resulting into elimination of militants and recovery of three AK 47 rifles," said the defence spokesman. Reports reaching here said that the group of Jaish militants was passing through Muqdam Mohalla in Dooru area in the outskirts of Sopore this afternoon, when army's elite paratroopers, joined by the soldiers of 22 RR and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police intercepted them. One of the militants opened indiscriminate fire at the soldiers when bullet proof vehicles carrying them stopped in front of him. In the initial exchange of fire two soldiers were injured. They were identified as Ajeet Pradhan and S Kapur of 22 RR. "As the gunfight turned intense, two militants of the group jumped into a cowshed belonging to Ghulam Mohammad Pal and engaged the forces in fierce gun-battle. The forces zeroed in the cowshed and the adjoining residential houses and made public announcements asking people to vacate their houses. Later, the paratroopers carried out final assault and killed the three militants," said reports.
