| SRVES concerned over apathy towards endangered Hangul | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Jammu, Jan 28: Social Royal Voluntary Environmental Service (SRVES), a state based environmental faction have expressed serious concern negligent maintenance of data regarding the status of Hangul which was listed in endangered species in 2008 and now is Awarded Least concerned species Status in 2014 . Talking to media persons, Er Idrees ul Haq Beigh (C.E.O SRVES) said; "The Kashmir stag (Cervus Hanglu) , which is the state animal and was listed as critically endangered by IUCN in its Red list, as their population was counted 160 mature individuals in the 2008 census- has been awarded the status of Least concerned status according to IUCN's recently published list on their website. Beigh Said "The Hangul which once was numbered from about 5,000 animals in the beginning of the 20th century. Unfortunately, were threatened, due to habitat destruction (cement factories) , over-grazing by domestic livestock, and poaching. This dwindled to as low as 150 animals by 1970. Beigh also said that Project Hangul under the Department of wildlife conservation and protection is proving nothing for the preservation of this endangered species. Hangul is battling for his life in the 141 sq kms Dachigam National Park located on foothills of Zabarwan range on the outskirts of Srinagar which was once distributed widely in the mountains of Kashmir. The justification provided by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources to put the Hangul from endangered species to least concern species is due to a wide circumpolar distribution and presumed large populations. According to IUCN there have been range contractions and presumably population declines in some parts of the species' range but it is not believed to approach the threshold for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations) which is Not true & aptly shows the official negligence to maintain the data regarding Hangul. The NGO also express concern towards this official negligence regarding the maintenance of the Data for endangered species& sending it to IUCN. "We request to Government of Jammu & Kashmir to officially start a probe regarding this negligence & we also request to government to shut the industrial sector (cement industries) around Khrew which is mostly responsible for degradation of habitat of this endangered species, "said Beigh. He added that in case the government fails to protect & preserve the natural habitat of these endangered species of Jammu & Kashmir, the organization left with no other optionbut to stage a state wide agitation regarding this apathy. |
